Discrepancy (1990 - 1992)

Formed by Kenny Manson, Dave Custer, Dave Morris and Mark MacDougall, it was only when Kevin McGillivray was asked to join that things began to take off. A rough, raw sound was evident from the start, and before too long a keen understanding was built up between the fledgling band-mates. The songs included versions of Iron Maiden, Tesla, Faster Pussycat, Metallica and Death Angel favourites.

When Kenny decided to leave, to form 'Vitriola', the rest of the band were left with few choices. When Kenny's brother Ally offered his services, it seemed the natural thing to accept.

Ally fitted in well from the start, organising a rehearsal room at the now defunct 'Scapa House', and before long the gang were itching to play live.

Two weeks before their debut gig however, a spanner was thrown into the works - drummer Mark MacDougall suffered a huge attack of stage-fright. Complaining of 'sore hands', he pulled out of the band, leaving just a fortnight to find and rehearse a new drummer.

Salvation came in the form of Peter Kelly's cousin - Chris Hoggan, a 15 year old metal head who just happened to be in Thurso on holiday. With a week's practice he had nailed almost all of the set.

And so, in early 1990, Discrepancy played their first gig - at the Moonshine Rock Bar. It was a monumental success.

The keen interplay by the two guitarists, coupled with the raw energy and power of Dave Custer's rumbling basslines helped make the evening a roaring success, culminating in a dance floor of head banging maniacs indulging in the first ever moshpit that Caithness had ever seen!

Gig after gig followed, almost all of them a roaring success, including perhaps the most prestigious musical event so far held in Thurso - The first ever Edge Of The World festival, which Discrepancy proudly opened. Another highlight was the headlining appearance at the TVEI event at the High School, where the band managed to blow up the PA System!

Gigs then followed fast and furious, and things were well for a time.

However, the rumblings of discontent reared their ugly heads later that year, with Ally suggesting the band cover the Cancer song 'Die Die'. This was not accepted by Kevin, and indeed much acrimony ensued. It simply was not acceptable to Kev to do an out-and-out Death Metal song, and he was not slow to point this out! Indeed when the song was played live Kevin refused to participate, with Alan Fisher filling in the guitar duties.

This was the beginning of the end for Discrepancy. The little idiosyncrasies of each member was taking its toll and inevitably the band disintegrated.

The lasting legacy was the glorious memories of Thurso's first ever true Heavy Metal band.
